Asking why Islamic civilization declined—despite possessing the divine guidance revealed to Prophet Muhammad—is not an intellectual luxury; it is a vital search for a cure for the nation’s ailments. How could a nation that once provided an unprecedented model of science, ethics, and urbanism fall into civilizational absence? Today, the world desperately needs this guidance to redirect its course, as humanity nears self-destruction by abandoning and opposing the final message.

In the quest for an answer, the Quran itself identifies the root of the crisis. Regarding the 'civilizational survival equation,' the Almighty states: ( God does not change the condition of a people [for the worse] unless they change what is in themselves) (Ar-Ra'd:11) Religion is not the cause of the nation's decline, nor is external conspiracy the primary culprit. The true cause is internal; enemies only dared to attack when the nation weakened from within. Regarding the failure of conspiracies against a steadfast nation, the Almighty says: (But if you are steadfast and conscious of God, their scheming will not harm you in the least) (Ali 'Imran:129)

Dr. Abdul Karim Bakkar states: "Nations are not defeated from the outside unless they are first defeated from within. Without the courage for self-review and course correction, others will continue to dictate our civilizational path. When constructive criticism vanishes and competence is sidelined, collapse becomes inevitable. Civilization is not built on good intentions alone, but through a systematic framework of accountability, reform, and constant evaluation (1). Here are the reasons behind this internal decline:

1. The Decoupling of Religiosity from Civilizational Progress

From the first revelation of 'Read,' Islam was never confined to rituals; it spent years forming the human psyche and creed before legal mandates were even established. The Quranic commands to 'observe' and 'travel' turned faith into a catalyst for science and medicine while Europe languished in the Dark Ages. Abdulaziz Al-Assali argues that today’s 'civilizational coma' exists because Islamic values have lost their vital link to the civilizational dimensions of Monotheism (Tawhid), ultimately stifling social effectiveness. (2)

2. The Closure of the Gates of Ijtihad and Intellectual Stagnation

The first Islamic Renaissance was powered by 'intellectual courage' based on the ultimate objectives of law and a profound understanding of texts. This led to a dynamic legal system that evolved with time while staying true to its core spirit. Science and philosophy flourished as acts of worship and stewardship of the earth. However, this momentum was halted by blind imitation and a sense of intellectual inferiority. Despite the prophetic tradition encouraging constant renewal, the culture became rigid. Closing the door to independent critical thinking did more than restrict interpretation; it paralyzed the ability to respond to social changes. Consequently, great values like justice and mercy became static slogans rather than tools for reform(3), ultimately stifling innovation.

3. The Absence of Justice and the Rule of Law

No civilization can truly flourish or even take root in a climate of persistent injustice. The Quran directly links the collapse of nations and societies to the spread of oppression, as the Almighty states: ([just like] the former communities We destroyed for doing wrong: We set an appointed time for their destruction.) (Al-Kahf:59) And the Almighty states: (How many towns steeped in wrongdoing We have destroyed and left in total ruin; how many deserted wells; how many lofty palaces!) (Al-Hajj:45) And the Almighty states: (God commands justice, doing good, and generosity towards relatives and He forbids what is shameful, blameworthy, and oppressive. He teaches you, so that you may take heed.) (An-Nahl:90)

Prophetic tradition underscores that the truly just—those who maintain fairness in their leadership, their families, and all their duties—occupy a position of supreme honor in the eyes of the Creator. Historically, thinkers like Al-Mawardi identified 'comprehensive justice' as the essential pillar for a prosperous world; it creates social harmony, inspires loyalty, builds nations, grows wealth, and ensures security. On the other hand, nothing hastens the ruin of a society more than systemic oppression, which recognizes no limits and spreads corruption until it is absolute.(4)

4. The Crisis of Ethics and Moral Integrity

The Almighty says: (When We decide to destroy a town, We command those corrupted by wealth [to reform], but they [persist in their] disobedience; Our sentence is passed, and We destroy them utterly) (Al-Isra:16)

Civilization is not found in books; it is lived in daily habits. It requires mastering work, honesty in interactions, and valuing time as the currency of existence. It thrives on trust built on brotherhood rather than mere interest. When these behaviors fade, the civilization retreats. In short, a civilization devoid of ethics is inevitably committing suicide.

5. The Absence of a Unified Civilizational Vision

Powerful nations are driven by a clear civilizational vision: they know their direction, their goals, and their unique contribution to humanity. In contrast, many modern Islamic societies are caught in a state of oscillation. They waver between consuming a superficial version of modernity—which carries a false identity disconnected from their heritage—and a past whose true spirit and intellectual depth they have lost. Lacking a unified, contemporary project, they risk losing their core purpose. The Quran defines a specific mission for the nation; it is a responsibility so fundamental that if it is abandoned, the Creator replaces that people with others who will fulfill it. As the Almighty says: (so that you may be witnesses over humanity) (Al-Baqarah:143)

To be a 'witness' to humanity requires active presence, excellence, and leadership. Yet, the nation today is defined by its civilizational absence; for those who are absent cannot testify for those who are present. Fragmented and lacking a unifying vision or a grand project, its societies operate like isolated islands, working in silos. How, then, can such a divided entity exert any meaningful influence on history?

The civilizational stagnation facing the world today is the natural outcome of the stalling of the nation's core driving forces: faith as an engine, independent critical thinking, applied ethics, and a historical vision. Thus, the rotation of civilizational power is a just universal law, ensuring the nation remains conscious of its mission: (We deal out such days among people in turn) (Ali 'Imran:140) If the nation succeeds in reclaiming these core energies and activating them based on its foundational principles, it will once again excel in leading civilizational progress. By offering a new framework of values, it will guide the world toward a path that ensures its inevitable restoration.
