Humoud Al-Roumi: Serenity of a Worshipper and Dignity of a Preacher
Birth and Upbringing
Humoud Hamad Saleh Al-Roumi was born
in 1938 in Kuwait City. He grew up in the Al-Shamlan neighborhood before his
grandfather moved the family near the Bin Roumi Mosque in Dasman. Coming from a
conservative household, his maternal grandfather studied Islamic jurisprudence
under Sheikh Abdulaziz Al-Alji of Al-Ahsa and raised him with strong religious
values. His grandfather even composed poetry about him:
"As for Humoud, we expect
goodness in him, He shall become the delight of the
eye indeed."
Education
Al-Roumi began his studies under Mulla
Suleiman Al-Khunaini and learned the Qur’an from Mulla Hussein Shuaib of
Failaka Island. He spent a year at Al-Najat School, one of Kuwait’s early
schools after Al-Mubarakiya. Later, he enrolled in the Religious Institute in
Kuwait, excelling until he earned his secondary certificate. This qualified him
to study at Al-Azhar or Cairo’s Dar Al-Uloom College, where he enrolled in
1958. After completing his studies, he returned to Kuwait and worked at the
Teachers’ Institute (now the College of Basic Education).
His Preaching Activities
Al-Roumi began his preaching journey
in 1953 at the age of sixteen, joining the Guidance Society under the influence
of his uncle Khaled Al-Roumi, a member of the society. His conservative
upbringing helped him integrate into its activities. He regularly attended
religious and intellectual lessons and participated in spring camps. His
studies in Egypt temporarily interrupted his involvement with the society.
Parliamentary Membership
Al-Roumi entered politics in 1981,
running for parliament in the fifth district (Faiha) and winning. He was
re-elected in 1985. His parliamentary record includes opposing constitutional
amendments in 1982 and participating in the questioning of Justice Minister
Salman Al-Duaij in 1985.
Presidency of the Reform Society
Following the death of Abdullah
Al-Mutawa in 2006, Al-Roumi assumed the presidency of the Reform Society for 12
years, continuing the legacy of his predecessor. Under his leadership, the
society revised its statutes, expanded committee work, and ensured participation
in national Qur’an competitions. The society received numerous awards for
charitable and religious work during his tenure.
When calls emerged to restrict
charitable and social work, Al-Roumi countered them with calm wisdom, often
reminding members: “As long as your work is for God Almighty, do not fear.”
He also maintained a warm relationship
with His Highness the late Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, who
praised his efforts in serving Kuwait and its people.
Recognition and Honor
Honoring Humoud Al-Roumi is a
recognition of his lifelong dedication. After 65 years of service in religious
and social work, his calm personality guided the mission safely forward.
The Reform Society will hold a tribute
ceremony at 7:30 p.m. today, Tuesday, at its theater in Rawda, under the
patronage of Minister of Social Affairs and Labor and Minister of State for
Economic Affairs Hind Al-Sabeeh.
