World Food Program Warehouse Looted

The World Food Program in Sudan has accused the Rapid Support Forces of looting its warehouses in Gezira State. This incident has caused widespread condemnation from various organizations, including the United States Agency for International Development.

Rapid Support Forces Storm Warehouse

Members of the Rapid Support Forces raided a warehouse and an office of the World Food Program while taking control of Wad Madani, the capital of Al-Jazira State. This action has resulted in the loss of food supplies that could have fed approximately 1.5 million people for a month.

Food Rations for Malnourished Children Stolen

The looting also targeted rations meant for 20,000 malnourished children and breastfeeding mothers. The stolen food items, including legumes, sorghum, vegetable oils, and nutritional supplements, amounted to over 2,500 tons. These supplies are crucial for saving lives.

Outrage and Demands for Protection

Michael Dunford, the World Food Programme’s Regional Director for East Africa, expressed his outrage, stating that the Sudanese people who were already desperate and fleeing the fighting have now been robbed of vital aid. He called on the Rapid Support Forces to ensure the protection of humanitarian aid, workers, and buildings in the areas they control.

Escalation of Violence and Humanitarian Crisis

The suspension of food aid in Gezira State was announced a week ago due to the escalating violence in the region. As a result, approximately 300,000 people have been displaced, creating a severe humanitarian crisis. The situation worsened when the Rapid Support Forces took control of Wad Medani, the state capital.

Deadly Conflict and Displacement

Since mid-April, the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces have been engaged in a deadly conflict, resulting in over 12,000 deaths and more than 6 million people being displaced or becoming refugees. The United Nations has expressed concern over the dire situation.
