This is a message to the children of the blessed Islamic movement “Hamas,” written by the esteemed educator, Zainab al-Ghazali, may Allah have mercy on her, and published by “Al-Mujtama” in issue number (968) on May 29, 1990. We are republishing it again due to its importance.
A Message to the Children of “Hamas”
O offspring of the holy land and its Jerusalem, the third of the holy sites, I used to be overwhelmed with sadness as I witnessed the complacency with the rulers of the West and East, governing the world without Sharia authority, turning a blind eye to our beloved cause, the cause of Palestine. In all my Salahs, I make du’a to Allah to send forth a group that fights in His path, in the land of my beloved Jerusalem. Then you came... caravans of light... banners of guidance... a revolution of truth and a new shout awakening the numb Muslims, heedless of their sacred land, lost in their worldly affairs, away from a right they should live for.
Summits are held with no results, and rulers act out scripts read in daily, weekly, or monthly newspapers with no fruitful outcomes. We are the Ummah of action, the Ummah called upon by Allah's saying: “And say, 'Do [as you will], for Allah will see your deeds, and [so, will] His Messenger and the believers. And you will be returned to the Knower of the unseen and the witnessed, and He will inform you of what you used to do.'” (At-Tawbah: 105) So, what action did the Islamic nations worldwide take to bring Palestine back into Muslim’s arms?!
Then you came, O children of “Hamas,” a guiding light, not a burning fire. With believing hearts, you uttered the words of Allah: “Indeed, Allah has purchased from the believers their lives and their properties [in exchange] for that they will have Paradise. They fight in the cause of Allah, so they kill and are killed. [It is] a true promise [binding] upon Him in the Torah and the Gospel and the Qur'an. And who is truer to his covenant than Allah? So rejoice in your transaction which you have contracted. And it is that which is the great attainment.” (At-Tawbah: 111)
So be, O children of “Hamas” as, “[Such believers are] the repentant, the worshippers, the praisers [of Allah], the travelers [for His cause], those who bow and prostrate [in prayer], those who enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong, and those who observe the limits [set by] Allah. And give good tidings to the believers.” (At-Tawbah: 112)
Be a spark, thriving to become a light. Be the blessed tree with a solid trunk and branches reaching towards the heavens. Be seeds of renewal, sprouting and growing strong, becoming a crop that impresses farmers and enrages disbelievers.
You, children of “Hamas,” are the hope and the blessed vision. The day will come when you enter Jerusalem, like a roaring wave, raising the banner of “There is no god but Allah, alone without a partner. Muhammad is His servant and Messenger,” saying with clear voices, joyful and grateful to your Lord for His blessings: Jerusalem is ours! We said it as a hope; it was our dream, and now it has become a reality. We entered Jerusalem, and it belongs to us by the ruling of our Book. We will bring justice to the People of the Book with our Quran and the Sunnah of our Prophet. We are the Ummah of Islam, an Ummah that once ruled with justice but then disappeared. Now we have returned to establish the Quran as judgment and the Sunnah as a path to bring joy to the world once again.
Thus, O children of “Hamas,” do not be frightened by the weapons of falsehood, for falsehood has no standing. Truth will prevail; even if wronged, the day will come when it returns, raising the dreams of justice, truth, and fairness for everyone who was wronged or denied their rights.
You are the followers of the Prophet, who was called by Allah saying, “And We have not sent you, [O Muhammad], except as a mercy to the worlds.” (Al-Anbiya: 107). Today, you are a sign to the return of that mercy, so do not despair, and be the leaders of sacrifice and dedication.
